Having said this, you’ll be glad to know that the United States doesn't fall short! In fact, the US is also home to world-class ski resort areas that'll will give European ski resorts a run for their money.
I've rounded up below, what I think are ten of the best places to ski in the states, hope you find it useful:
1. Aspen/ Snowmass
First on the list of top 10 places to ski in the US is Aspen Colorado, which is nestled in the Gunnison National Forest and it’s known for its great skiing and snowboarding conditions all year round.
The city of Aspen is located just a few hours drive west of Denver and it’s one of the most popular places to base in Colorado for a ski vacation because of its close proximity to Snowmass where you can enjoy endless runs, half pipes and terrain parks.
2. Taos/ Taos Valley
The town of Taos is located in northern New Mexico between the national forests of Carson and Santa Fe.
Taos is another popular destination to base for a ski vacation in the states since the town is located a short drive from great ski areas such as Taos Ski Valley.
Taos Ski Valley is known as the Swiss Alps of New Mexico because of its European feel and great terrain ideal for challenging skiing.
3. Ketchum/ Sun Valley
The city of Ketchum is nestled between the Sawtooth National Forest and just a few miles away from Sun Valley, which is of the top 10 places to ski in the US without a doubt!
Sun Valley is surrounded by some of the most stunning natural scenery and it’s one of the premier family ski resorts in the US because of its groomed runs and high quality trails.
If you’re an experienced skier, Sun Valley is also an excellent ski area because it’s surrounded by wilderness, where you enjoy plenty of snowboarding and backcountry skiing opportunities on offer.
4. Teton Village/ Jackson Hole resort
Teton Village is another popular place to base in the states for a ski vacation because of its close proximity to the city of Jackson Hole Wyoming.
Teton Village is home to the popular Jackson Hole Ski Resort, which boasts some of the best slopes in the world for intermediate and advanced skiers, as well as verticals up to 4,000 feet above the floor.
5. Lake Placid
Lake Placid is located in the High Peaks forest on the northern corner of New York State. Lake Placid is truly a historic village since the Lake Placid was the former Olympic village for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games.
Lake Placid is one of the top 10 places to ski in the US because of the variety of runs and terrains to suit all ski levels.
Another great thing about a ski vacation in Lake Placid is that many of Olympic venues have been converted into fun areas such as the ski jump ramp, which is now a fun toboggan slide.
6. Lake Tahoe
If you’re looking for another top notch ski destination in the southwest of the US, look no further than the area around Lake Tahoe, which is located on the California-Nevada border.
Lake Tahoe California is surrounded by some of the most stunning and breathtaking natural scenery in the world.
Three of the best ski areas in Lake Tahoe are Heavenly Mountain resort (in South Lake Tahoe), Sugar Bowl Ski resort and Squaw Valley resort. All of these boast great skiing and snowboarding opportunities, terrain parks and half pipes.
7. Stowe/ Stowe resort
The town of Stowe Vermont is one of the most popular ski destinations on the east coast, and another of the top 10 places to ski in the US.
Stowe Vermont is located a short drive from the top ski resort in the area - Stowe Mountain resort - which is located on the base of Mount Mansfield. Mt. Mansfield is the highest peak in the Mt. Mansfield State Forest and boasts verticals of over 4,000 feet high.
Stowe Mountain resort also boasts groomed runs and quality trails ideal for backcountry and cross country skiing, as well as a terrain park and half pipe for snowboarders.
8. Gatlinburg/ Ober Gatlinburg
Gatlinburg Tennessee is another fantastic destination to enjoy a ski vacation in the states, and the best thing is that Gatlinburg is just a stone throw away from the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort.
What makes Ober Gatlinburg resort such a popular ski area is the fact that the resort is located at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains national park so you get to ski surrounded by beautiful natural scenery and enjoy amazing views from the Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway.
9. Brian Head resort
Brian Head is located in southern Utah within the Dixie National Forest and it’s one of the most popular family-friendly resorts in Utah as it offers plenty of outdoor opportunities all year round.
During the winter months, you can enjoy snowmobiling, snow tubing, cat skiing and, even night skiing at Brian Head resort.
Probably the best thing about Brian Head resort is that is located within a short drive from Cedar City and St George.
10. Mt Hood
Mt Hood National Forest in Oregon maybe the last entry on my list of top 10 places to ski in the US, though by no means it's the least popular.
In fact, Mt Hood is home to two of the most popular ski areas in the Pacific Northwest – Summit Ski Area and Timberline ski resort, not far from the city of Portland OR.
Summit Ski Area is a popular choice for families with kids because of the easy slopes and the fun snow tubing area.
Timberline ski resort is easily one of the best ski resorts in the states and it's certainly one of the most popular ski areas since you can enjoy a ski vacation there all year round, even during the summer months!
