What to Pack/What Not to Pack
It is no secret that visiting Honduras comes with its own set of risks. In order to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of local crime, visitors should only bring along the necessities. This is not a place to bring a lot of jewelry or flash around a lot of cash. Instead, cash should be spread out between different people in a group and tucked away to keep it out of sight.
Bringing only one credit card and keeping a majority of a person`s funds in traveler`s checks is a great way to protect the money and avoid local entanglements. While there, women should be sure to pack everything necessary to maintain a certain appearance, especially when traveling into some of the smaller villages.
Be Aware of Cultural Traditions and Expectations
Women especially need to be aware of the cultural norms that surround their appearance and behavior. For example, in many locations, women are expected to wear long skirts or dresses that completely cover their legs.
Look Into Vaccines
When planning a trip to Honduras, travelers are not required to get vaccinated to enter Honduras. However, most doctors recommend to have the following vaccinations done: Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Rabies and Hepatitis B so it's a good idea to have them done before heading out to Honduras.
Because things are set up differently in Honduras, the medical facilities are not always up to the standards that most people are accustomed to. With the help of certain vaccines, it is possible to avoid some of the diseases and medical issues that are commonly found overseas. It's a good idea to have vaccines such as tetanus, MMR, polio and others up to date.
Make a List of Sites to Visit
The itinerary is, no doubt, one of the top things to remember when planning a trip to Honduras. Despite the preparation and precautions that need to be taken, there are plenty of sites to see in Honduras for a relaxing vacation. The Copan Ruins are a popular stop for people looking to take in the history of the area.
There are underground tunnels to explore and plenty of opportunities for photography. For those interested in diving, the smallest of the Bay Islands, called Utilia, is a great place to go. The local people are friendly and there is a lot to see and do there. Shoppers will appreciate the Mercado Guamilito, an open market area with food, trinkets, and handcrafted items made in Honduras.
Hiking Honduras
Hiking is one of the best ways to get up close to the Honduran countryside and where better to enjoy it than at the national parks?
