Best Beaches in Southern Spain

Heading to the south of Spain for the beaches?
Best Beaches in Southern Spain

You’ll find that all of the beaches in southern Spain are located along the coast of Andalucia province, which pretty much makes up the south of Spain. Andalucia’s coastline is huge and beautiful and spans roughly from the city of Huelva (west) and the city of Almeria (east).

Southern Spain’s coast is home to four of Spain’s famous costas…Costa de la Luz, Costa del Sol, Costa Tropical and Costa Almeria. Along these costas you’ll find literary hundreds of superb beaches to choose from, which are ideal for partying, families with kids, water sports enthusiasts, campers, and nudists.

The most popular beaches in southern Spain are certainly the ones located in the major cities of Cadiz (Victoria Beach), Marbella (Nikki Beach), Almeria (Monsul Beach) and Malaga (La Malagueta Beach), although these beaches aren’t necessarily the best ones in southern Spain. If you really want a true taste of southern Spain’s beaches, you’d definitely want to head to one of the beaches as follows:

Cerrillos, Roquetas del Mar

Playa de Cerrillos is actually one of the six beaches located around the fishing village of Roquetas del Mar, though Cerrillos is definitely the best. A few reasons why Cerrillos (playa) beach is one of the best beaches in southern Spain include:

1) great location for wind sports such as windsurfing and kite surfing,
2) has a nudist section,
3) it’s a fantastic spot to view birdlife like flamingos.

Another thing Cerrillos beach has going for are historic sights….there is a cool Moorish castle and watchtower you can photograph.

El Cristo, Estepona

El Cristo beach is one of the nicest family friendly beaches in southern Spain and it’s only 10 minutes drive from the main beach town of Estepona. If you are traveling with kids, you won’t have to worry about strong currents since El Cristo is a Blue Flag beach and the waters are really calm and shallow.

El Cristo beach is also popular for snorkeling and people looking to get a sun tan in a relatively peaceful atmosphere without the huge crowds but still within the tourist trail.

Bolonia, Tarifa

Bolonia beach is easily one of the most beautiful beaches in the Costa de la Luz and it’s overall one of the most pristine beaches you can visit in the south of Spain. If you’re looking for a beach surrounded by stunning scenery, Bolonia beach is one of them!

Bolonia boasts miles of lovely white sands and offers amazing views of the Gibraltar strait and even views of the Atlas mountain range of North Africa in the distance. The best bit about Bolonia though is the lack of crowds, which makes this beach a really great spot to kick-back on the sand.

Cabo de Gata Natural Park

Cabo de Gata Natural Park (Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata) is located on Costa Almeria, around 50 minutes drive east of the city of Almeria. The park is one of the nicest places to go in southern Spain for a beach vacation surrounded by nature and mountain scenery.

There are many accommodation options within and near the park which range from villas, vacation rentals, lodges, and hotels such as Hotel el Dorado, which is located in the town of Carboneras. Another reason why Cabo de Gata is one of the best beaches in Southern Spain is because the park is home to miles of deserted and beautiful beaches nestled within coves and cliffs.

Almayate Bajo, Velez-Malaga

If you’re looking to do beach camping in southern Spain, one of the best places to go is Almayate Bajo, which is roughly located between the fishing villages of Rincon de la Victoria and Nerja...and just 30 minutes drive from Malaga.

The campsite in Almayate Bajo is called “Camping Almayate Costa” (Tel.: +34 952 55 62 89), where you can do tent and caravan camping. If this campsite is fully booked, you could always head to “Laguna Playa” campsite in nearby Torre del Mar. This campsite has over one hundred pitches, as well as bungalows.
