10 Things I learned while Traveling

By Joseff Alovera

I consider myself a frequent traveler because I love to visit new places and experience life in these foreign territories. I am not a rich person but I made a promise that I would enrich my wellbeing with experiences gained through travel. I am a believer of the adage “great things are usually found outside our comfort zone” and that’s why I make it a point that I get to visit one or two new places each year.

Apart from majestic views and attractions in places that I visited, there is one thing that you can also gain from frequent traveling and that is life lessons. In my years of traveling, I got to know several life lessons which helped me become a better person. Here are some of the wonderful lessons I learned which I ought to share with you.

1. Different People Yet Same Needs and Wants in Life
I’ve met various nationalities in my 10 years of travel. I managed to interact with them in bars, parks, and cafes. Although they come from different places, speak different languages, and live life differently, they all share the same needs and wants in life. Common wants from the people I talked to include validation, love, and security. And this is what I love about traveling, even though these people are different from me, I can still relate to them because these are the things I want in my life too.

2. Convince People by Living a Good Life
You can convince people by showing them what your passion is all about. I travel because I want to experience life out there. Showing them pictures of my journey convinces people that the world has so many things to offer and these things need to be experienced before we leave earth.

3. It’s Okay to Say “I Don’t Know”
Saying I don’t know is okay because you acknowledge limitations. It is okay to admit your own limitation than to be an ignorant fool.

4. More Money Will Never Solve Your Problems
Some of us want more money but in actuality, as long as you eat sufficiently, live in a small yet comfortable apartment or home, and have necessities in life, there’s no need for extra money. The key is to look beyond the price tags. Dwell more on things that does not actually cost money. Perfect examples of this are friends and families.

5. Get outside and do something with other people
I mentioned this above “great things are usually found outside your comfort zone.” There are so many wonderful things to experience out there. Experience these things with other people. Journey with them and make travel more fun and memorable.

6. Learning New Languages Breaks Boundaries
People around the world learn English because at the moment, it is a universal language. However, if you truly want to experience the country you’re in, make sure that you know the native language so you can talk to the locals. This is how I made my travel more meaningful. By learning the native tongue, I was able to immerse myself with the people making my travel more personal.

7. Take Your Time
Whether you’re traveling or working on a routine, it is important that you take your time. There’s no need to be in a hurry unless you’re already late at a meeting. Whatever it is you’re doing, take your time and savor every moment.

8. You can’t Please Anyone
It is impossible to please everyone so don’t. Just stick to your principles, be who you are, and remember you don’t have to explain yourself every time they don’t get your actions.

9. Possessions Own You
One of the things that limit people to travel is possessions. I admit that I own things back home but I am gradually disposing things that limit my love for travel.

10. People have Stories and Views Different from Yours
Understand that you’ll meet people with views and opinions different from yours and it is important that you acknowledge and respect them.
